Series:Ruby Quest
Gender: Male
Age: 29
Species: Anthropomorphic fox
Sexuality: Straight
Appearance: Red's appearance seems to strike an interesting balance between completely normal (well, at least to people that are used to seeing anthropomorphic animals) and creepily sinister. Initially he doesn't strike a very imposing figure. After all, he only stands at just over five feet tall and is thin to an unhealthy degree. He is rarely seen without a snazzy cane, and he walks in an odd, slightly stooped manner with it. Anyone paying close attention or who is around when he has to strain himself will notice that he is perfectly capable of moving without the cane and standing straight up like anyone else. This is only the beginning of his peculiarities, however...
Red seems to be perpetually grinning, even when idle and alone. When others are around, however, and depending on the situation he will offer a variety of sizes of toothy smiles. More unsettling is the fact that his mouth seems to actually vary in size at times, allowing for impossibly huge grins. In contrast to his frail outline, the fox's teeth are all incredibly sharp. At times, usually when Red isn't paying much attention, there is a large scar visible running from the right edge of his mouth almost up to his cheek bone. At other times, it is gone.
When not being overtly creepy Red seems friendly, if not exactly trustworthy. Being a fox, his eyes often appear closed, but give him an amused look. His face is thin but surprisingly pleasant for someone who seems so malnourished. His parents evidently had a lame sense of humor or terrible imaginations: one look at his fur gives away his namesake. His ears are large, pointed, and end in black tips. They seem to move very little. His tail, like much of the rest of him, is very thin. It also ends in a black point and is eerily still.
Despite his original appearance, Red dresses well. He normally would wear a very fine, custom-tailored brown suit and white poofy shirt along with black leather gloves and shoes. Due to a lack of tailors (especially those who make suits for anyone not human) at the moment, Red scrounges up the best he can. He still tries to wear nice suits and leans towards brown, but they often do not fit properly and are in varying states of disrepair.
Personality: Red used to care. He used to really care. About himself, about the world and bettering it, and about his co-workers and patients. Then a little voice spoke to him. He wasn't crazy, he couldn't be. He tried to ignore it, but it wouldn't stop. It gave him advice, and the advice sounded good. Don't take the treatment. Why should he? There wasn't anything wrong with him, and they didn't know about all of the side-effects, yet... And that's when The Metal Glen became Hell. Red isn't totally sane. He doesn't hear voices any more, because they really weren't in his head. They helped push him over the edge, however.
The poor fox isn't sure what to make of himself or life, anymore. In brief moments, he will remember things he did in the past and is very remoseful and regrets the things his old self did. Most of the time, however, he does his best to forget about all of that entirely. In short he doesn't know what to make of anything, so he simply DOESN'T.
Red no longer cares. He doesn't fear death, but he prefers to be alive these days because he enjoys being amused. Amusement is what he lives for, now, and he doesn't mind to get it at the expense of others. Red wouldn't go out of his way to kill or even really injure someone else. In fact, he can even be quite helpful and a part of his caring self still lives on in that he often wants others to succeed. He only does, however, so he can watch what they do in case it is interesting. If someone bores him, he isn't above completely ignoring their existence, and will not go out of his way to even save the life of someone he doesn't deem amusing enough.
Abilities: Red has a mean poker face. Essentially any "tell" or flick of emotion he ever displays is entirely intentional. If he ever wants to hide something, it's going to be hard to tell. Especially if whoever is trying to read him has no experience with foxes. Additionally, it's extremely difficult to break his concentration. Some combination of his education, outlook on life, mental state, and force of will allow him to basically completely ignore people he wishes, short of them touching him. To an extent, if he is truly determined to not acknowledge someone's existence and their physical contact with him is light/brief, he can literally not even notice.
Physically, the only real advantage Red has is that he is somewhat nimble. He's not really that fast, but surprisingly flexible and good with his hands.
He is, however, very intelligent. He used to be an Optometrist and Scientist, and was capable of building a timer-based explosive in secret out of random household objects.
The only supernatural ability that Red possesses is a "virus" in his body. It seems to have localized around his mouth, and is responsible for the shifting/vanishing of his scar, and for the fluctuating size of his mouth. It also allows him to temporarily open his mouth impossibly wide, increasing the size and sharpness of all of his teeth as well as causing new ones to appear. When this happens, his voice becomes much louder and he is able to continually speak/laugh without the need to breathe. Red dislikes doing this, and it occasionally happens against his will. Considering that he doesn't ENJOY doing it and how frail he otherwise is physically, this is much more used to scare someone off or as a last-ditch defense.
Weaknesses: Red is physically somewhat weak. He doesn't need his cane to walk and doesn't have any active or debilitating injuries, but his build is very slight and he isn't in the best of shape. He is also slightly malnourished, and unfortuately, cannot do much to prevent that. The "virus" that shifts his face also affects his digestive system, and he is essentially able to eat and drink just enough to stay alive, and is prone to violently vomiting any excess along with some blood.
Red is somewhat of a nut. It can be difficult for others to understand him at times, and he doesn't always make sense of situations. His creepy demeanor and tendency to make very grim, unfunny jokes are very off-putting and aren't going to make him many allies any time soon. He has a bad habit of entirely denying the existence of problems or things he doesn't like.
Manhattanite or outsider?: Outsider. After supposedly commiting suicide in his world, Red found himself here.
History: Red lived a fairly normal life in a wealthy family. He never wanted, but when attending school his eyes were opened to the wider world and the suffering of others. He became an optometrist and studied science, hoping that one day he could cure blindness and help people in any way that he could.
His intellect and great work earned him the attention of a fellow scientist, Filbert. Filbert and some investors were going to build an under-water facility for the research and treatment of blindness. Red was initially unsure. The facility had a strange location, and none of the investors, who Red only knew as "The Board", would speak with him directly. After speaking further with Filbert and understanding the plans, he gave in and considered that this could be an excellent chance to do exactly what he'd planned to.
Red had moved in to this new facility, named The Metal Glen, during its construction. While digging out areas, workers found something strange: there was a room already built down here! Red investigated the room and discovered a strange fleshy substance growing there. He and some of the other workers took it back to study the effects. Red was able to realize the true potential of the substance, and designed a treatment from it. The substance, along with the station's technology, were capable of inducing a form of regeneration! It could cure blindness, removed the need for eating or drinking, and improved the health of users. By the time this was discovered, the facility was complete and now had several research subjects who had volunteered to stay at The Metal Glen to help. Red, excited, ordered this treatment to be administered to all research subjects and staff. Red himself refrained from taking the treatment. After all, every experiment should have a control, and if one person had to be less healthy than the others then he would gladly do it.
Shortly after, strange things began to happen. Red could hear voices speaking to him at night, and some of the cured patients were acting strange. One went berserk and tried to attack other patients. A few weeks later, one of Red's patients pushed another patient into one of the facility's ventilation fans, killing him. The nature of the murder made it look like an accident, and Red was sure his patient was not in her right mind. He hid the security tape for that day and was going to attempt to speak with his patient. Later, the same patient calmly snuck up on Red and with an industrial hook, badly cut open one side of his face open from his mouth. Thankfully, one of the security guards was able to stop her from killing Red entirely.
At this point, Red knew something was wrong. The whispering had increased, and he knew there was no reasoning with his patient. Two days later, he beat her to death with a cane. To Red's horror, the treatment he was suggested worked well. Too well. Both patients who had died were now alive and walking again next month, and neither had any recollection of what had happened. Soon, chaos ensued. Both patients began to exhibit terrible mutations and violent behavior, killing others. The facility fell into a state of anarchy. For some reason, The Board had ordered the facility be sealed and no one allowed to leave. One worker, Bella, followed The Board's orders unquestioningly. Under control of all of the facility's security, there wasn't anyone who could stop her, and Bella could not be convinced to let anyone out. One of the facility's top security guards, Ace, became a mindless robot. He stopped speaking, and would every day patrol the facility for anyone who had died, take them away and administer treatment.
No one could leave. No one could die. Red's mind, already fragile from having committed a murder and the voices, snapped. There was no other way out, suicide was the only answer. It was quick, it was painless... And it failed.
Unknown to Red, Filbert had been drugging his food with the treatment for some time. Ace had been strengthened by the treatment and was now an immortal, unstoppable beast that forced treatment on anyone who even so much as harmed themselves. Red's mind was shattered before. Now it was ground into a fine powder.
Fortune was on his side, however. The treatment could not entirely replace lost material, it could only regenerate damaged material. Not only that, the treatment would only work within a certain time limit. If Red could sufficiently slow down Ace and damage his body enough, he wouldn't be able to be resurrected.
Being resurrected caused memory loss for a short time afterwords. Red's patient whom he had killed, Ruby, had recently been brought back, along with another dangerous patient, Tom. The two did not remember who they were or what was going on, yet, but were trying to find a way out, and were actually making some headway towards Bella as well as having re-killed two other patients. This was perfect.
Red set his plan into motion. He gathered two coins from Ruby. Two coins to be used as conductors. Conductors for a bomb. Red had built a bomb on a timer in secret, and sent Ruby and Tom on a pointless chase for more items, promising to open a locked door for them in return. Once the pair got back, they discovered Red's true plan: he had impaled himself on two broken stakes. He was the bait for his own trap. His corpse drew out Ace, just in time to be blown out of the room by Red's home-made explosive. The explosion stunned Ace, destroyed Red's corpse, and blocked the room with debris, and the timing allowed Ruby and Tom to make an even further distraction for Ace. They would never catch him. Never. Never.
